My background is in
marine surveying,
and I hold a STCW
II/2 Certificate of
Competency as Master
Mariner.
Additionally I am a
Member of the
Nautical Institute
and an associated
member of RINA.
I began my career as
a Deck Cadet with
Bowater Steamship
Co. I joined
Ellerman Hall Lines
and having attained
my 2nd Mates
Certificate of
Competency, I was
employed mainly on
general cargo and
passenger vessels.
Ellerman merged with
Ben Line and I
subsequently moved
companies ¡°Fast to
the Far East¡± as
Second Officer,
having gained my
Mates Certificate of
Competency, sailing
within the general
cargo and container
fleets.

I achieved my STCW
II/2 Master¡¯s
Certificate and
joined the Dover
Ferries as Second
Officer rising to
Master and took
command of my first
ferry in 1979.
During my time as a
Surveyor, I gained
accreditation and
was employed as a
Lead Auditor
carrying out ISM and
ISPS audits on
British Flag
vessels.
I also gained
further experience
whilst carrying out
safety, construction
and damage surveys
on varying vessel
types during
dockings, refits and
whilst in service to
meet both local and
International Flag
and Port State
Control
requirements.
I also administered
examinations for
Deck Officers
applying for UK
Certificates of
Competency.
Having moved out to
the Far East in 2007
I was employed with
Lloyd¡¯s Register
Asia as a Senior
Specialist dealing
with Port State
Control issues.
My duties included
the inspection and
the reporting of the
condition of Lloyd¡¯s
Register vessel¡¯s,
new build,
conversions and
existing ships for
Fleet Quality and
for the preparation
of Port State
Control inspections.
I am a fully
Authorized Lloyd¡¯s
Register Auditor
both in ISM and
ISPS.
As a consultant
marine surveyor at
AMS Shanghai Ltd, my
principal areas of
specialty include;
Flag State
inspections for the
Marshall Islands and
St.Kitts;
Ship condition
surveys and
inspections for P&I
Insurance interests
and underwriters;
Investigating damage
claims on behalf of
the Salvage
Association,
detailed reporting
and interviews to
establish nature,
cause and extent of
losses.
